Why Go to a College Fair
October is College Fair season!
Twice a year — once in the fall, and once in the spring — college reps make the rounds to college fairs for your state, your county, your district, or even your high school. And you can get that schedule from your guidance department, and then definitely go.
They’re a great opportunity for you to get a lot of information about a lot of colleges all at once. But also a great chance for you to meet your regional rep who might be the first person reading your college application and deciding whether or not to pass it along to the next round.
So you want to make a good first impression:
- Don’t dress sloppy (but don’t be the weird kid in a suit either)
- Make eye contact when you talk with them (don’t let your parents do all the talking)
- Tell them something about yourself to be memorable
- Ask qualitative questions; not quantitative questions you could easily google or find in their literature (i.e. don’t ask, “do you have my major?” Ask, “what are your school’s strengths or benefits for my major?” and get their opinion)
Then get their contact information, follow up with an email the next day after the college fair with a quick thank you, and make sure they remember you.
