How to Begin & End Any College Essay

Hey guys! It’s Eric at Solution Prep. Today we’re talking about the two most important — and toughest — parts to write of any college application essay — that’s the beginning and the end.

For the beginning, so many students feel like they need to write the perfect first sentence, and they won’t let themselves move on until they have. They think once I get that everything else will flow from there; so I just have to think and think and think. Well, stop — just stop!

Just write — write everything! Write everything you can think about. Tell your whole story and then read it back. Because somewhere in there you might find that perfect gem that belongs as your first sentence and you can just bring it to the top. Or maybe cut the paragraphs before it — that you needed to get out of your system — to get up to where your story actually should begin.

Then there’s the ending. It’s hard to stick the landing, guys. To wrap everything up in a neat little bow; so don’t try. Write a bad ending. Write a few bad endings. Write it over and over different ways, and then look at them all. And you’re going to find pieces you like within big parts you don’t. Then you can take those little pieces, Frankenstein them together, and make a really good ending.

So get writing! And if you have any questions on how to begin and end any college essay, call us at 732-556-8220. We are here to help.
