Common College Essays: Meaningful Activities & Service

This month we’re talking through some of the most common prompts colleges assign for those school specific application essays. One that we see a lot is: tell us about an extracurricular activity, or tell us about a community service activity that’s been most meaningful to you through high school.

This is your opportunity to show them long-term commitment over multiple years, to show them leadership and growth, and to show them your passions outside of the classroom.

Also, it’s a chance to show them that because you’re involved in high school community service and activities, you’re likely to get involved in college and not just go to class, go to your dorm, do your homework, and shut down for the night; because students who don’t get active on campus, who don’t involve themselves in organizations are less likely to come back as sophomores.

So make sure to not just talk about an activity, a sport, a club that anybody could talk about. Talk about your unique experience with it; your contributions or a specific moment that only you could talk about that will make you stand out from among all other application essays.

Get writing. And if you need any help, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 732-556-8220. We are here to help.
