Common College Essay: The Diversity Essay

This month we’re talking through some of the most common prompts colleges assign for those school specific supplemental essays. And one that we’ve seen a lot more lately is the diversity essay where a college asks why is diversity important to you, or how will you contribute to a diverse student body or some other iteration thereof.

Some students have a lot to say on this topic, and if that’s you; this is your chance. Other students roll their eyes at this topic.

But this is not just a college asking about your values, it’s also them showing you their values. And if their values don’t match your values, maybe pick a different college that does.

So your diversity extends beyond just your ethnic background or your gender identity. It can also go into diversity of thought and socioeconomics, and this is your chance to talk about either the diverse background you come from and the seamless transition you’ll be able to make to their diverse student body. Or even talk about how the homogenous background you’ve had makes you yearn for a more diverse and inclusive society where you’ll get to learn from people of all walks of life and become greater through that experience.

So get writing. And if you have any questions about writing your diversity essay, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 732-556-8220. We are here to help.
