3 Parts of the “Why this College” Essay

This month we’re talking about the most common prompts colleges assign for those school-specific supplemental essays, with one of the most common being the “Why this college?” essay.

This is your opportunity to demonstrate your interest and show them that if they accept you you’ll accept them back.

So there are three important pieces. First, you want to talk about what you saw on your visit so do make sure to visit and talk about something better than it was pretty — they’re all pretty — that’s why they have landscapers. Talk about the amazing buildings, talk about the amazing facilities, talk about the people you met.

Second of all, you want to talk about your major so learn more about your program, learn about the school within the school where you’ll be studying, talk about the classes that are unique to that school, the professors you could only learn from there, the labs they have, the opportunities you’ll get.

And third, you want to talk about the Student Life opportunities you’ll have there to be able to continue the activities you love now into your college years; which also shows them you’ve done the research and know a lot about their school.
