Building a Great College Résumé
Today I want to talk to 10th graders about what they can be doing right now to build a great application resume for when college admissions time comes.
One of the biggest myths is that colleges are looking for the most well-rounded students. A lot of adults misinterpret that as students who’ve done a little bit of everything—sort of just checked the boxes.
That’s not true. Colleges want the most well-rounded student body. They want individual, passionate students who can come together, cross-pollinate, and become greater than the sum of their parts as a result of those relationships.
If there are activities you love, do more of them. And if there are activities you’ve just kind of always done since you were little, but you feel like you’re outgrowing them as you get older, let them go. It’ll give you more time to dig deeper into things you love and the time to explore things you’ve always been curious to try.
Colleges want at least two, but preferably three years of a track record with your activities, so if you start now, in 10th grade, and you love it, 11th and 12th grade makes three years, and you’ve got a winning college resume.
