30 Self-Guided College Visit Tips in 90 Seconds

This week we’re talking about how to take self-guided tours of college campuses during your visit.

Sometimes your availability doesn’t fit the college’s calendar but you can still go on your own and see a lot of things.

Find the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. See if your local rep is available to answer any questions you might have.

Even if admissions is closed, there might be information you can pick up. Take any opportunity to demonstrate interest and show them you were here.

Get yourself a campus map; some schools have a suggested route so you can walk yourself around and read all about them. You might be able to scan some QR codes along the way.

Pull on some handles because you never know which ones are open. Some schools, everything’s just locked but you can call ahead and find out so you don’t waste a trip.

Look inside a lecture hall, see what a classroom’s like, peek inside the labs.

Prepare to walk a lot.

Check out the fitness center, sports facilities, the student center, the football stadium.

Go check out the library, find the study spaces. Ask yourself, “would I be comfortable here?”

Try to go when classes are in session so you can see what campus life is actually like.

Prepare for a little bit of rain.

Talk to a student.

Sometimes, I just sneak on the back of a tour.

Try eating the food on campus.

Check out the bulletin boards to see what activities students are excited about.

Try riding the bus.

Try to not get too lost.

Go walk around the college town.

Get yourself a shirt.
