How to Build Your College Hook

Today we’re talking about hooks: a hook is a reason why a college might notice and pick you over other qualified candidates.

Now there are some hooks you can control but other hooks you can’t.

You can’t control if you’re a legacy applicant, meaning you have a sibling or parent who goes to that college, went to that college, or even works at that college.

You can’t control your family’s economic standing or whether you come from an under-resourced community.

You can’t control if you’ll be a first generation college student; the first in your family to go.

But other hooks you can control… is a coach recruiting you for sports? That’s a hook.

Do you have demonstrated interest? You’ve been to the college, you’ve met their reps; that can be a hook.

Do you have intellectual curiosity and academic passions? You can develop those hooks through your essays.

And at the end of the day colleges want to put together a diverse group of students from a variety of backgrounds, and you want to show them why you’re a great candidate for whatever category you’ve fallen into.
