When to Commit to College vs When to Wait

The exciting of process college acceptance letters has begun! With them comes the pressure from each college to get you to commit and send in that deposit. If you apply for Early Decision, you will likely have to pay that deposit by January. Be sure to read your letter.

For regular admissions, you have until May 1st, National College Acceptance Day. You need to send your deposit and commitment by this date in order to go forward. Most colleges want you to commit sooner so they know they have you, and might even offer you a small scholarship.

If housing is not guaranteed your freshmen year of college, they may use that as an “Act Now!” tactic to get you to commit. As long as everything is in line with housing and money, you can wait and watch the other acceptance and award letters pour in. It’s good to weigh out your options and maybe revisit the campus before making a big decision.
