Do You “Qualify” for the FAFSA?

One question I get from parents is asking if they qualify for the FAFSA, and the answer is yes! Every American citizen and green card holder meets the FAFSA qualifications and can fill out the free application at FAFSA.gov

The FAFSA is your first step for need-based aid from the government, both federal and state, and for the colleges, you’re applying to. This can also include major-based grants, federal work-study, and low-rate government loans. Everyone filling out the FAFSA will be offered these opportunities, regardless of income.

Just because you may not be offered something in every category, doesn’t mean you should skip filling out the FAFSA and leave those other dollars on the table. Most importantly, some colleges won’t release your merit scholarship you have earned if you don’t fill out the form to make sure they’re not losing federal dollars before reaching into their own.
