Test Optional vs Test Blind

I wanted to talk to you today a little bit about what test optional means vs what test blind means.

There are a lot of schools that, either prior to the pandemic or because of the pandemic, have gone “test optional,” and a lot of folks think that means those colleges don’t ask for scores, don’t want scores, or don’t look at scores. But the fact is, the word “optional” implies it’s an option. So sending good scores can still help you get into those colleges.

There are other colleges that are what’s called “test blind.” A test-blind college right now—like Cornell, Catholic University, or public colleges in California—does not care about scores at all. They’re not going to look at them, even if you try to send them. So if you’re applying to colleges that are test blind, you don’t need these scores, and you don’t need to prep for these tests.

But if you’re applying to colleges that are “test optional,” then good scores can still help you, and you should work hard to get your best possible score to give you an edge to get you into that college.
