Sorting Through College Mail

Today I wanted to talk to juniors about what to do with all the college mail you’re getting.

For email, first, you want to set up a separate account just for this. That way, when you’re done with the whole admissions process, you can just never check that email account again.

Second, for any college you’re not interested in, scroll all the way to the bottom of the mail and click the “unsubscribe” link. Once you can get rid of those, you can focus better on the schools you really are interested in. That way you don’t wind up missing opportunities for visits, or to demonstrate interest, or to learn more about your major.

Now for the mail coming in the actual door. You want to set up two baskets: one for the colleges you’re actually super-interested in and a second for the ones you would consider, but you’ll read the stuff later. For the schools you’re super-not-interested-in at all, get rid of that stuff. You can give it to a friend, recycle it, or maybe even give it to your guidance department.

But you want to make it easier to focus on the schools you do care about, because right now you should be working on whittling down your list of schools so that, by August 1, you know which schools you’re applying to, because that’s when schools open their school-specific applications.

So get to work, and give us a call at 732-556-8220 if you have any questions.
