How to get more FINANCIAL AID

Today I want to talk to parents of seniors about your student financial aid award letters and how to get more.

You’re starting to get some of those letters, and some of them may have a lot less free money than you need to afford to send your student to this college. But the good news is you can appeal that financial aid decision.

If you’re making less money now than you were two years ago, which is the tax year your FAFSA is based on, or if you have less in assets than you had last fall when you filed the FAFSA, you should definitely appeal the financial aid decision.

You can find that at the college’s financial aid website, or if you can’t find it there, just call that office and somebody will point you in the right direction.

But they’ll take a whole fresh look at your ability to pay, and if you have less ability, they might give you more free money to help you meet that difference.

Even if you have the same in income and assets as you had according to your FAFSA, they might just give you a few thousand bucks to make you shut up and sign and get you over the finish line. And if you were going to sign anyway, maybe get a few thousand bucks before you do.

The one thing I’ll caution you about is, if you’re making more money or have more in assets than your FAFSA says, maybe don’t do the appeal because that fresh look could actually take away some of the money that you don’t need anymore.
