Do Colleges Care About a Major?

Hey guys. It’s Eric at Solution Prep. And today we’re talking about applying “undeclared“ for your major.

Some colleges consider applicants by major or the school within a school to which they apply. There are only so many seats.

But if a student isn’t quite where they need to be for a direct admit to their major, they may still get into the overall college, with the chance to eventually earn their way up.

Other colleges don’t consider major, just whether the student is a good fit; you’ll figure out a major later.

There are even schools that don’t let students declare till sophomore year, and some with specific programs to help undecided students figure it out.

Most apps ask for a major, but colleges with major-specific essays are often the ones that prefer students with concrete ideas.

For highly competitive majors, it might be best to apply “undeclared” — or for a less competitive major — then transfer into your top-choice later where possible.

If you’re torn between majors, ask your colleges whether “undecided“ or picking something for now offers the best chance of acceptance.

But if you have no tangible experience with your major, or no clue what you want, consider colleges with lots of options where you’ll take a variety of classes and eventually settle on the right major for you.
