Avoid this College Essay BIG MISTAKE

One of the biggest mistakes students fail to avoid when they write their college application essays is writing someone else’s story.

If you’re writing an essay about your background — or your gratitude — it’s very common to write about a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, or a mentor. But too often students get distracted by writing about that person — writing about their sacrifice, their contribution, what makes them so wonderful — but this essay needs to be about you.

Maybe the impact they’ve had on you, maybe what you’ve done with that impact. So you need to be the star of this story, and that other person can be part of the background and an integral part but not the main character.

Likewise, if you’re writing about an activity you did with a friend, with a group, with a team; so often students write, “we did this”, and “we did that” and they focus on what their friend was doing next to them.

Look, if you’re the one who is applying to college, you need to write about your specific contribution; what did you do. Because if you both did it, and you’re one of the both, then just say that you did it and forget about that other person for the sake of this story.
