Why You Don’t Need the Ivy League

Today I want to tell you why you don’t need to go to an Ivy League college.

Eight colleges make up the athletic conference called The Ivy League: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth and UPenn.

This year, 2022, they received their biggest applicant pool yet, at 306,909. They only accepted 7.12%, which is 21,856 students. And some of those are the same students two or more times. Meanwhile, there are 26,727 high schools in America.

That means that for every valedictorian, every salutatorian, and every top-achieving student who thinks they should go, there just aren’t enough seats for them to all get in—not to mention all the international students who get into these colleges from high schools outside of America.

Even then, of those students who were accepted, only about two-thirds will wind up enrolling, at about 14,668.

My point is, there are other things to drink than Coca-Cola, there are other things to wear than Levi’s Jeans, and there are other colleges out there than “The Ivy League” where you can get a great education and have a happy and successful adult life.

Even then, you can get your undergraduate degree at one college and then maybe go to law school, med school, business school at an Ivy League college later. There are lots of opportunities and lots of paths toward success, and I don’t want you to get tunnel vision and get stuck on just one thing.
