SAT Math With NO Calculator!?

Today we’re talking about the non-calculator math section on the SAT.

A lot of students hear about that and they get very nervous; they’re like, “oh no! The calculator is where my brain exists!” Well let me assure you, the calculator is a number crunching machine, but you are a problem solving machine. So solve the problem.

The number crunching is not the hard part on this section. It’s basic arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. You can do it!

There’s also a calculator math section on the SAT, and a lot of students feel very relieved. They’re like, “ah, thank goodness, I can use my wooby again!” But let me warn you, a lot of those questions are deliberately designed to be harder with a calculator than without a calculator.

So you have to think critically — just because you can use that calculator, does it always mean that you should? Because for most of the questions you can solve them with some basic problem solving and not need a calculator at all.

Now on the ACT, you’re allowed to use a calculator for every math question, and on the redesigned, digital SAT launching in March of 2024, here in America, you’ll be able to use a calculator on every math question as well.
