Being Smart About High School Course Selection

It’s the time of year when guidance counselors are sending home class selections for next school year. And that leaves high school students and their parents wondering which are the right classes to take next school year. Middle school is easier than high school, and high school is easier than college. And if you want to be ready for college, you have to push yourself to grow to that point.

So if you pick classes at the same level where you’ve always been, you’re staying at a 100%, you are staying flat. But if you pick classes that push you to 110% of your comfort level, then you are growing. That said, be careful that you don’t push yourself to a course load that’s at about 120% because that’s where you could possibly drown.

So think about the AP or IB and dual enrollment classes available to you next year. Think about things like Honors or Advanced or Academic A, or whatever it is your school calls the next level from where you are. Because if you’re getting an easy A right now, I’d rather you get a more challenging A next year. And if you’re getting a challenging A right now, maybe get yourself a tutor next year so that a challenging B can become a possible A.

Think about the growth you want. That way you’re ready for college when you get there. And if you have questions, call us at 732-556-8220. We are here to help.
