5 Things to Know Before Starting College

Today I want to give you 5 things every rising college freshman should know before starting college.

Number 1: Every college has a math lab, a writing lab, all kinds of labs where tutors are literally standing by waiting to help you. So if you’re struggling—which you might be, because starting college is a big transition—go and get that help.

Number 2: Take a look ahead at your syllabus. For most college classes, the Class 1 homework is not assigned after Class 1, it’s what you’re expected to complete before attending class one. It’s kind of backwards from what you’re used to in high school.

Number 3: Most college professors have office hours. Attend them. Show up and meet these professors. Let them get to know you. Because when you’re a name and a face, not just a number, when you’ve created that relationship they’re more likely to look out for you if you’re struggling and mention opportunities for you when they come across them.

Number 4: If you have not taken a college writing class yet—maybe in high school—take it in the summer before freshman year, because all of your college classes but math and science will expect you to write on the college level, which is hard if you have no experience with that yet.

And Number 5: Nobody wants to hear it, but take a self-defense class. You’re going to be living on your own for the first time in your life, and you have to know how to handle yourself.
