Good Topics for College Essays

This week we’re doing a two-parter: this week and next week. This week we’re talking about good topics for college essays.

We’ve talked before about how grades and scores are what qualify for college, but at the end of the day, your essays are what distinguish you from other qualified students and get you selected.

The #1 essay topic college admissions officers tell us, year in and year out, is what they’re looking for is SOMETHING BIG!! Something big is something about you that shows your motivation, determination, perseverance, and achievement.

Motivation means it came from you. You didn’t just put your name on a list and show up; you cared. Determination means it was going to be hard; the road ahead was going to be challenging, but you cared enough to do it anyway. Perseverance means, at some point, maybe things went off track, but you got them back on track due to your hard work. And achievement can mean you achieved what you set out to achieve or literally anything else: learning a lesson, learning what you want to major in, literally anything.
