The SAT is CHANGING (again)

We have to talk about the big announcement that the SAT is going to change and what those changes are.

It’s not really a big surprise; they do change about every decade, so much so that I’m currently teaching my third iteration of the test after changes in 1994, 2006, and 2016. And in March of 2024, I’ll teach my fourth iteration of the test when it goes totally digital, only available on computer and tablet screens.

They’ll change the PSAT in 2023, that way it’ll to align with the SAT changes later that same school year. (That timeline will be one year sooner for testers outside of America). So if you’re in 11th or 10th grade right now (classes of 2023 and 2024), there’s no change for you; you’re on the current test.

But for those students in 9th grade right now (class of 2025), it’s going to change mid-junior year, so you’ll have the option of finishing all your testing by December of junior year or waiting until March to be a guinea pig for the new test.

Other things we know are going to change include: They’re getting rid of the non-calculator math section, so calculators will be allowed on all math questions. Also, they’re going to go back to some of the short passage reading comp questions we had back in the 2006-2015 version of the test. Lastly, it’s going to be an adaptive test, so how well a student performs in one section will set their score range and difficulty level of questions in their next section, which will fine-tune their score.

There’s a lot we don’t know, there’s a lot they haven’t announced, but we’re here to learn. If you’ve got questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 732-556-8220. We are here to help!
